My Top 5 Favorite Videogames

Updated: Jan 26, 2023

What is it about your favorite video game that makes it your favorite? I have quite a few, favorite videogames myself but these 5 games are the ones I play most, continuously, for hours on end. Note that this list is my own personal opinion and should probably not be used to get recommendations for games YOU might like. A better use of this article would be entertainment or getting an idea of my personal gaming tastes, and how that reflects in what I play. As well as hearing reasons for why I love these games so dearly.

5. Yume Nikki

Yume Nikki is a game where you play as a young girl named Madotsuki and explore your dreams. You can collect up to 24 different effects that change her appearance and equipment. The game takes on an almost open-world style taking away from gameplay to put it solely on the theme of exploration. Random events also occur throughout the game in the form of cutscenes and unique gameplay sequences. Unlike most RPGs, this game lacks a traditional plot or battle system. Gameplay instead focuses on exploration of the dream world. The game itself has a very niche appeal yet, if it turns out to be up your alley it could prove a great addition to your collection. I've played this game hundreds of times for as long as I can remember.

4. Terraria

Playable in both single-player and multiplayer modes, Terraria is a 2D sandbox game that focuses upon exploration, building, crafting, battle, survival, and mining. The game's 2D sprite-tile-based graphics are evocative of the Super NES's 16-bit sprites. The game is praised for its timeless exploration-adventure gameplay, which is reminiscent of titles like the Metroid series and Minecraft.

3. Mother 3

Mother 3 began life as a Nintendo 64 title before eventually transferring to the Game Boy Advance. In the West it's become something of a cult — a near-mythical Japan-only release that fans of Earthbound have been desperate to play in an official capacity for fifteen years. That fervent fanbase has taken matters into its own hands with unofficial translations, but beyond the Lucas Smash Bros. amiibo there's been no indication we'll see it any time soon. This is the the third installment in the EarthBound Trilogy. The top-down world exploration and turn-based enemy fighting are the main game features in Mother 3, as in earlier installments. The plot of the game centers on Lucas, a young child with psychic powers, and a group of characters as they try to stop a mysterious army from corrupting and destroying the world.

2. Omori

Omori is a fantastic game with some truly excellent writing, enhancing a dark and brilliant story. It has recently gained significant attention and is widely regarded as the newest indie darling. Most players believe this game to be in the same vein as other RPG hits like Earthbound because of its quirky nature.

In the game, Sunny, a teenage hiikikomori boy, and Omori, his dream world avatar, are controlled by the player. They investigate Sunny's bizarre dream world as well as the actual world, either overcoming or repressing his anxieties and buried secrets. The player's decisions will determine how they interact, which will lead to one of several possible outcomes. The turn-based battle system in the game has unusual status effects based on the emotions of the characters. The game prominently depicts ideas like depression, anxiety, guilt, mental illness, psychological trauma, and suicide. It also contains significant psychological horror elements.

1. LittleBigPlanet 2

Now most people wouldn't have this game in the top spot but I'm personally ranking based on favorites from my own life and my own experiences.

Another reason this game has gained the top spot is because of the replayability. LittleBigPlanet 2 is one of the games that I've played absolutely indiscriminately. The LittleBigPlanet series is essentially the original Mario Maker (they even appropriated the tagline), and similar to Super Mario Maker, the amount of levels that actually exist today exceeds the number of levels that the developers originally built. You can play as Sackboy and, go through the main pre-built stages, or attempt one of the hundreds of thousands of user-created levels.
